Chess Grandmaster Steven Gordon is coming to Leeds Chess Club to give a simul on Sunday 26th September, starting at 2.30pm with the last game expected to finish at around 6.30pm. As Stephen is currently rated 2534 ELO and graded 242 ECF, number 8 on the ECF grading list, this will be the strongest grandmaster that has given a simul at Leeds Chess Club, since I took over the club. This is a great opportunity that doesn't happen in Leeds very often. If you are available and would like to play, please enter here. Tony Ibbitson, tony@leedschessclub.org - Tel: 07875553775.

Pre Season Meeting - 7th September 2010, 7:30pm Start at the Latvian Club (Clifton Villas)

Play a Grand Master! GM Daniel Gormally Simultaneous Event - Saturday, 14th August 2010
Chess Grandmaster Daniel Gormally is coming to Leeds Chess Club to give a simultaneous. This will take place on Saturday 14 August at The North Leeds Working Men's Club and will start at 2:30pm. You will have the black pieces as you can't expect Danny to take black when he will be playing around 30 people simultaneously!. Daniel is currently rated 2491 and is currently ranked 18th in the country according to the FIDE rating list, Richard Palliser is 27th so this is a huge leap up for the next simultaneous event! He is about 34 years old and his peak rating was 2573 back in January 2006 which today would have been high enough to place him at 5th in the country! Danny was in fact ranked number 4 in England when he competed for his country in the 37th olympiad! This is a great opportunity that doesn't happen in Leeds very often. If you are available and would like to play, please enter here. Tony Ibbitson, tony@leedschessclub.org - Tel: 07787613083.

Idle RapidPlay - Tuesday 27th July 2010

Play a Grand Master! GM Stephen Gordon Simultaneous Event - Tuesday, 13th July 2010
17 BDCA players took on Englands youngest Grand Master Stephen Gordon at Idle Chess Club on Tuesday 13th July 2010. An enjoyable evening was had by all who played against Englands current number 9 seed (FIDE active player rankings). The BDCA players once again did themselves proud with a score of 5 out of 17 against the young GM. Wins were recorded by Mike Bramson (Undercliffe CC), Gary Corcoran (Idle CC) and Kevin Winter (Bingley CC). Draws were also earned by Paul Kadzionis (Undercliffe CC), Ian Smith (Undercliffe CC), Darren Bedford (Crazy Horses CC) and Winston Williams (Bingley CC). Best game prize was awarded by Stephen to Idle Gary Corcoran who Stephen said had "simply outplayed him" in a terrific end game. Many thanks to all who played.

Play a Grandmaster! GM Stephen Gordon Simultaneous Event - Tuesday, 13th July 2010
Following on from the popularity and great success of this event last year Idle Chess Club are proud to announce that we will once again be hosting one of England's top Grand Masters holding a simultaneous event at Idle Working Mens Club, on Tuesday 13th July 2010. Grand Master Stephen Gordon will play all opponents simultaneously (with his opponents allowed to choose their colour) and will take on all challengers regardless of playing strength! This event is open to all BDCA players so please let your club members know about the event which promises to be even more entertaining than last year. The gauntlet has been thrown down to Stephen to beat the 14.5/20 that GM Keith Arkell scored against the BDCA elite last season! If you would like to play in this event then please contact Andy Wainwright at idlechessclub@yahoo.co.uk or on 07977 538488. Entry, as last year, is set at £10.00 per player and prizes will be awarded on the night for best game so freshen up on your opening theory!

4NCL - Division 3 North
For those of you who are not aware the 4NCL is the premier level of team based chess competition in the UK, see: http://www.4ncl.co.uk/

The 4NCL has recently confirmed that it intends to launch a new Northern 3rd Division in the 2010/2011 season to run parallel with the Southern 3rd Division. Idle Chess Club have been in contact with the 4NCL organisers to confirm that they intend to enter at least 1 team in this 11 round competition which is played over 5 weekends (none of which clash with the YCA Saturday league). Teams consist of 6 players, and it is recommended that teams therefore run with a squad of 10-12 players. Idle Chess Club would like to invite any interested players who are keen to compete in this exciting new league to contact Andy Wainwright at: idlechessclub@yahoo.co.uk. If interest is sufficient from the BDCA league and a suitable second captain comes forward then we could even run two teams.

YCA Saturday League
The Yorkshire Chess Association Saturday league is a highly competitive competition with a great history and strong support. See: http://www.yorkshirechess.org.uk/

Idle Chess Club intend to enter a team in the third division of this competition (the Silver Rook) in the 2010/2011 season. We would therefore be keen to hear from any player who is interested in joining our energetic, competitive and sociable group in this new endeavour. Our intentions for this first season are clear - we intend to win and we are confident that we have the nucleus of a squad capable of doing so, we just need a few more enthusiastic players to ensure our target is met. If you are interested in joining our Saturday team for the 2010/2011 season then please contact Andy Wainwright at: idlechessclub@yahoo.co.uk.

BDCA League - Final Standings
Congratulations to South Bradford A on becoming 2010 BDCA League Champions with a narrow victory over Bingley Bees A who are relegated to Division 2 along with Undercliffe A. Nearest challengers Undercliffe B lost their final game to Polish by the narrowest of margins 3½-2½. In fact, if Undercliffe B had beaten Polish A by the same score, both South Bradford A and Undercliffe B would have had identical records resulting in a play-off!

Bradford Internationals had already secured the Division 2 title with a game in hand and ended up with the leagues best record of 12 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss for a total of 25 points. Second place and promotion to Division 1 went to Shipley Predators who held Clayton to a 3-3 draw pipping Clayton in the process. Enigma are relegated back to Division 3 but not before causing an upset in defeating South Bradford B in their last game condeming them also to life in Division 3 and ensuring Keighley would stay in Division 2.

Idle Phoenix are Division 3 champions and are promoted to Division 2 along with Dark Horses who defeated Bingley Bees B to secure promotion. The Wooden Spoon goes to Bradford Renaissance.

Totty/Cocking Standings for 2009-2010
Congratulations to Peter Rooney (Polish Parish Chess Club) on achieving the best record in the BDCA league this season. Congratulations also to John Saxton (Idle Phoenix) on winning the Cocking Trophy for achieving the best score outside of Division 1. Please click here to view proposals for rule changes/amendments to be discussed at this year's AGM meeting to be held on the 18th May 2010. In accordance with Rule 6(ii) of the Constitutional of the BDCA all individual members are entitled to attend, speak and vote at the AGM. Therefore your vote is just as important as anyone elses and you are invited by the BDCA to come to the meeting and help to shape the future of the BDCA. I would also remind you all that there are several vacancies for officers this year. On a personal note I would be most grateful if a volunteer were to come forward to take over the role of BDCA Secretary as personal and professional reasons mean that I increasingly feel unable to give this importnat role the time, effort and enthusiasm which it deserves. † Derek Holmes (1934-2010)

"It is with great regret that I have to report the sad loss of Derek Holmes who passed away suddenly on the 24rd February at his home in Ovenden, Halifax at the age of 76. Derek has been a major and well respected figure in Yorkshire chess for over 50 years. He played locally in Halifax before moving to Bradford Chess Club in 1962 and made his debut in my first match as captain of the Woodhouse Cup team. His arrival coincided with a decade of success for the club in which it won the Woodhouse Cup four times and he was also an important and proud member of the National Club Championship and British Postal Team winning sides of 1967 and 1972 respectively. During his forty years at the Club he missed few matches and was the epitome of  the ideal team player. He always gave a 100%, never complained about board order and would always take a draw or refuse one if it was in the team's interests whilst giving much encouragement to the numerous young players who developed through the Club during the intervening years. As a player he had a solid  style built on experience which varied little over the years and few Yorkshire players in the 1960/70s could match his end game technique. As a person he was essentially a private man, utterly reliable and who on long car journeys would  amuse us with his quiet sense of humour and anecdotes. In later life ill health took its toll and after being delighted to be a member of Bradford's Woodhouse Cup winning side in 2001 he decided to return to his roots and continue locally playing for Halifax and Calderdale. Derek will be sadly missed by all chess players who had the pleasure to meet him and our thoughts and condolences go to his widow Barbara and his family." Andrew Toothill.

Idle Reserves - Open Invitation
Idle Chess Club would like to invite all challengers to play our reserves team. Our reserves are free to play matches against any opponents at our venue (Idle Working Mens Club) on nights when our teams are at home for league action. We are also happy to receive challenges from teams to play on Clough nights or Hepolite nights later in the season. If your club has between 2-4 spare players on a particular night who would like to play a graded game then please contact us. Andy Wainwright - 07977 538488, idlechessclub@yahoo.co.uk.

ECF National Championship
Saturday 27 February saw Crazy Horses travel to Bushbury (Wolverhampton) in the quarter finals of the ECF Team National Championship (Minor). After losing the top board, Crazy Horses rallied with a couple of resounding wins (Steve Burton & Keith Marsh) and captain John Holliday forcing a draw in an opposite colour bishop endgame to bring the points home, winning 1.5 - 2.5 and ejecting last year's champions! John Holliday, Crazy Horses.

Division 4 - Message From BDCA Secretary
Please note that Division 4 which was proposed to be run this season has unfortunately not "got off the ground" and as such we have continued during the 2009/2010 season to run the 3 division structure that we have had for a number of seasons. The main reason for this is that the 8 proposed new teams for the 4th division could not be organised in time for the start of the 2009/2010 season.

Division 3 teams should note that there will be no relegations from Division 3 this season.

Alternative options are being explored for the 2010/2011 season to encourage new teams into the league, progress on this will be communicated via the BDCA website. Andy Wainwright, Secretary BDCA.

County Championships - 14th March 2010 at Valley Parade, Bradford FC, 1pm Start

PLAYERS REQUIRED. PLEASE CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE CO-ORDINATOR.

The zonal round run by the NCCU will be based on a new format of a Jamboree. Yorkshire intend to provide 7 teams. Open (16 players) and 12 players in the following U180, U160, U140 (2 teams), U120 & U100 based on new ECF grades.

Ihor Lewyk is co-ordinating the Open, U180, U160 teams Tel. 01274 567559, ihor13@tiscali.co.uk

John Fozard is co-ordinating the U140, U120 & U100 teams, Tel. 01226 792948, johnfozard@btconnect.com

It has been decided that the county will put out 3 teams in the U140, U120 & U100 based on a junior/adult mix that will give up and coming youngsters a feel of the competition and a chance of long play (1pm - 5pm ... time control proposed 40 moves 1hr 45 + 15 mins) at this level in a large team. We are aiming for a 50/50 split if possible of junior/adults. If any junior or senior player is definitely available and is keen to be considered for selection please get in touch with John Fozard in the first instance.

Stephen Burton is captain of a second U140 team based around the players that played in the U125 team (old grade) last year and will be made up of senior players, Tel. 0113 256 8157, sburtonchess@aol.com

If the teams qualifies for the next stage - players must be prepared to travel for the national play-offs later in the year between April and July (dates yet to be announced). John Fozard

Chess.com Update: The newly formed online Bradford chess team has now established itself with a core of players including Winston Williams, Matty Webb, Robert Pells; Peter, Graham & Nigel Redmond; John Holliday, Keith Marsh & Daz Bedford alongside other non league players including ex Allerton player Chris Wray & former St Bede's player Andy Krzyszczyk. A number of games have commenced including matches against Bristol & Northampton with others in the pipeline against Tashkent, The Channel Islands, Glasgow, Hong Kong & Singapore - all at a rate of 3 days / move. New members of any grade are more than welcome to strengthen the squad; you can join us for free on www.chess.com and searching the groups for 'Bradford'. John Holliday (Dark Horses).

BDCA League Positions After Week 10
A few interesting results in all divisions. Idle get smashed 6-0 by Polish makes it a truly 3 horse race in Division 1 (Idle may still have a role to play though in deciding the title winner as we still have to play all 3 top teams). Undercliffe A are in real danger of being relegated from Division 1 for the first time since I can remember. Bradford Internationals 100% record comes to an end. Leeds 175 lose top spot in Division 3 after losing to bottom of the table Destroyers and Idle Phoenix are held to a draw by Bradford College - makes it also a 3 horse race in Division 3 with all teams on equal points and all 3 still to play each other! Andy Wainwright-Secretary.

Rearranged Week 12 Fixture for Enigma -  Division 2, Tuesday 9th March 2010
Please note that the Week 12 fixture between Enigma and Ilkley B will now take place at the Upper Bolton Conservative Club on Idle Road (home venue of Undercliffe). Any queries please contact Enigma captain Geoff Briggs.

Revised Division 2 Fixtures - Enigma Chess Club
There have been a number of changes to fixtures in Division 2 concerning Enigma Chess Club. The amended fixtures are shown here in a revised Division 2 fixture list which I would ask all Division 2 captains to be aware of. The affected fixtures are against Bradford Internationals on Week 1 - 15/9/2009 and Week 8 - 12/1/2010 which have been reversed and also Week 7 - 8/12/2009 and Week 14 - 20/4/2010 against South Bradford B which has also been reversed. Enigma's Week 10 fixture on the 9/2/2010 against Clayton and Week 12 fixture on the 9/3/2010 against Ilkley B will now both be held at the Latvian Club (Bradford Chess Club). Please contact Enigma Secretary Geoff Briggs for confirmation of these changes if your team has been affected.

ECF National Championships
Crazy Horses beat Barnsley 3-1 in the ECF National Club Championship match held on Saturday 17 January 2010. On board 1, Dave Summerland overcame Brian Holdsworth with some rampant Knight play. On board 2, John Holliday weathered some early pressure by Vladimir Shaposhnikov, then won material and a pawn endgame. Board 3 saw Steve Burton succumb to, Nick Nixon ptrotege, Francesca Fozard after a close game; and on board 4 Keith Marsh converted early Queenside spacial advantage against John Fozard to a convincing win. The next round (last 8) matches will be confirmed soon'. John Holliday.

Shipley Rapidplay Results - 5th January 2010
14 players braved the weather to enter Shipley's Rapidplay competition. It was good to see some new faces, which led to a keenly contested evening. Such is Derrick Mason's generosity that each entrant left with a prize, be it a book, glass chess set or cash. The plan is to hold the event again on 25th May, the week after the AGM.  Hopefully there will be less snow then!

Matthew and Phil couldn't be separated after 5 rounds, with the only blemish (?) being a draw when they faced each other. Full results and seedings below:

- Matthew Webb (2), Phil Watson (1)
4 - P Walker (7 - Grading), A Youngs (4)
3 - C Stead, R Fletcher (UG - Grading), D Mason(5), A Wainwright (3)
2 - R Ellis, M McGinty (UG), J Makintosh (9), J Light (8) P Greenwood (6)
1 - F Schnedl (10)

6th Idle Rapid Play Tournament
The 6th Idle RapidPlay was an enjoyable seasonal affair in the last week before Christmas, which was made all the more eventful by the snow and ice that made travelling to the event quite difficult. 23 players did brave the cold though to compete in the competition and a fun time was had by all. The lead for the title was hard fought and altered from round to round with some surprising upsets and some magnificent games played.

In the end Peter Shaw (Idle) and Mike Bramson (Undercliffe) emereged as joint leaders on 5/6 after Matthew Webb (Idle) failed to convert his half a point lead on the chasing pack into a decisive margin, he lost in the 6th round to Bradford's Andrew Bak and finished joint 3rd on 4.5/6. Shaw and Bramson therefore played a 5min playoff for the title in which Bramson made a dubious sack to push home at attack which ultimately he could not convert into a win and Shaw was therefore able to convert his material advantage into victory to retain his title as Idle RapidPlay Champion.

Grading prizes were also won by Derek Ludlam (Undercliffe) 4.5/6 (under 145s), Amy Greenhough (Idle) 3.5/6 (under 120's) and Rob Fletcher (Idle) 3.5/6 (Ungraded section). I would personally like to thank three of my opponents for some of the best RapidPlay games I have enjoyed in a long time - Gary Corcoran (Sicilian Narjdorf), Mike Bramson (RuyLopez) and Peter Shaw (Benko).

Individual Lightning Results - Tuesday, 15th December 2009 - Idle Working Mens Club
A great tournament was held with 50 entrants in total. 17 of the 24 league teams were represented and we had a few new faces from the Leeds League and local works teams. We also welcomed back an old face in a Mr A.Kawalec who I am told played in our league with his father around 15 years ago for Shipley and Polish and was visiting from Germany. 6 rounds were played on the night and at the end we had a clear winner on 5.5/6, half a point clear from the chasing pack. Matthew Webb of Idle Chess Club won back the trophy that he has previously held on two occasions in 2005 and 2006. As always with the Individual Lightning it was fast paced, fun and played within the festive spirit that we always like to see at this event. The prizes were as follows:

1st - Matthew Webb (Idle) (5.5/6), 2nd(=) - A.Kawalec (formerly of Shipley), I.Lewyk (Bradford), M.Walker (Undercliffe), I.Hunter (S.Bradford) and G.Redmond (Enigma) (5/6). GP - S.Scurfield (South Bradford) (4.5/6), GP - P.Lezhenin (EchoStar) (4/6), GP - M.McGinty (Idle) (4/6).

After four games had ended Bradford were trailing 1/2 to 3 1/2 and looked headed for another heavy defeat like last year but then won three games to level the score at 3 1/2 all. Sunderland Cup - Sunday, 15th November 2009 - Wiggington School, York
This year, the Yorkshire Junior Chess Association has taken over the arranging of the Sunderland Cup and we wish to widen the entry not just from Yorkshire league teams - but any teams of 5 or over. There has been a change in qualification for individual entries - in that only adults and juniors with a YCA (old grade) of under 100 may enter in any team. There are a high number of juniors that play in the Sunderland - but we would welcome adult (or part adult/part junior) teams with players under 100 old grade. The team can consist of as many players as you want and the rules say the top 5 scores count. Start times and format are included in the entry form attachment. Usually the Organisers tend to draw adults & juniors of similar abilities against each other - to make it very competitive but 3 equal games. Click here for entry form in PDF or here for entry form in Word. For any queries please contact Alan Coupe on 01709 551532 (Home) 07791 609262 (Mobile) or John Fozard, Tel. 01226 792948. Keith Arkell Grandmaster Simul Event - Idle Bradford
Idle Chess Club hosted an excellent simultaneous event with GM Keith Arkell on Tuesday 23rd June 2009.

Keith played 20 players from a number of BDCA clubs over a period of approx 3.5hours. The event was thoroughly enjoyable, played in good humour by all and was a great opportunity for local league players to play a Grand Master.

Keith himself said that he was surprised by the quality of opposition which on paper ranged from 184(YCA) to 44(YCA). He stated that it was "probably one of the toughest simul's he has ever done". This was reflected in the score of BDCA players 5.5 - Arkell 14.5. In total there were 5 wins and one draw for the BDCA players.

The wins were taken by Matthew Webb (Idle Chess Club), Ihor Lewyk (Bradford Chess Club), Winston Williams (Bingley Chess Club), Mike Bramson (Undercliffe Chess Club) and Kevin Winter (Bingley Chess Club). The draw was claimed by Andrew Wainwright (Idle Chess Club).

Best game prizes were as follows: 1. Kevin Winter, 2. Winston Williams, 3. Mike Bramson. Kevin's game was singled out for praise by Keith who complemented Kevin for his attacking play and winning piece sack.

The BDCA would like to thank Keith for taking part in this great event.
